Buddha
Vihar
Buddhist Temple & Guesthouse
Buddha Vihar, Gwalior Road, is within walking distance to Agra Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage site) built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century.
Buddha Vihar was established here in 1956 by the followers of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist Movement and campaigned against social discrimination against Untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labour. He was Independent India's first law minister and the principal architect of the Constitution of India. His statue is located just around the corner from us, in the Ambedkar Park.
Although we are in the heart of the city, there is an expanse of lush green areas all around. The Archeological Survey of India looks after the historical monument of Red Fort and Taj Mahal, therefore no further construction work that might obstruct the historical sites is permitted in the area.
The institution is managed by Buddha Vihar Prabandh Samiti,
registered under Society Registration Act of 1860.
Bhante Kaundinya was the main architect and patron of various committees functioning under Buddha Vihar Prabandh Samiti. Bhikshu Gyanratna is at present the president and Mr Ramgopal is the secretary of Buddha Vihar Managing Committee.
Bhante Kaundinya was also the founder of The Buddhist Hermitage and school for underprivileged children in Vaishali (Bihar).
